Public Lecture Series – The Early History of Wilson School

Wilson School remains Florence’s longest lasting legacy of public education, but the facts surrounding its complex history are often misunderstood.

Florence County Museum is addressing the school’s early life with a lecture by curator Stephen W. Motte, to coincide with the school’s 155th anniversary and annual meeting of the Wilson High School Alumni Association.

“The school was established immediately after the Civil War, under the supervision of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,” said Motte. “This lecture will focus exclusively on the first 40 years, when the school was on its original site.”

The event will be held at the Florence County Museum, 111 West Cheves St, Thursday, October 7, 2021 from 4pm to 5pm. The event is free and open to the public.
